早期的电视是CRT阴极摄像管，CRT显示器学名为“阴极射线显像管”，是一种使用阴极射线管（Cathode Ray Tube）的显示器。主要有五部分组成：电子枪（Electron Gun）、偏转线圈（Deflection coils）、荫罩(Shadow mask)、高压石墨电极和荧光粉涂层(Phosphor)及玻璃外壳。它是应用最广泛的显示器之一，CRT纯平显示器具有可视角度大、无坏点、色彩还原度高、色度均匀、可调节的多分辨率模式、响应时间极短等LCD显示器难以超过的优点，而且价格更便宜。
这种只能显示黑白的，后来演变成RGB三种颜色的涂层，就是彩色的。
彩色电视制式是在满足黑白电视技术标准的前提下研制的。为了实现黑白和彩色信号的兼容，色度编码对副载波的调制有三种不同方法，形成了三种彩色电视制式；即NTSC制、SECAM制和PAL制（对于NTSC制，由于选用的色副载波的频率不同，还可分为NTSC4.43和3.58两种）。NTSC制是美国、日本等国家采用的彩色电视制式，SECAM制是法国、俄罗斯等国家采用，PAL 制是 1963 年联邦德国研制的一种制式，我国采用的就是此种彩色电视制式。建议在主菜单里看一下是否关闭了色度及对比度，如果你没有改变彩色制式（一般在主菜单设置中可以找到彩色制式，设置为PAL 或自动），只是在观看的情况下突然没有彩色，变成了黑白图像（改变频道，排除个别频道信号出现故障引起的无彩色现象），可能是电视机的色度通道出现故障，那么就要到维修点修理了。
您所提的问题只能从概念上来解释：黑白电视信号只含有亮度信息，而彩色电视信号不光含有与黑白电视一样的亮度信息还有彩色信息，为了实现黑白彩色电视兼容，彩色电视机把彩色电视信号分为两个通道来处理，一个亮度通道，这个通道的工作原理与黑白电视机是一样的；一个色度通道，处理彩色信息；然后再把处理后的亮度信号与色度信号合成就能显现出彩色图象；在黑白电视接收彩色信号时只要处理彩色电视信信号中的亮度信息就可以了，而彩色电视接收只含有亮度信息的黑白信号，只要关闭色度通道就成。要在技术上描述此过程篇幅太大，此处显得有此尴尬，建议阅读“百度文库”有关文章。
